COMMUNITY JUSTICE RESOURCE CENTER
Advancement Project is a legal and policy action group committed to the re-enfranchisement movement. Our updated handbook provides detailed guidance on how formerly incarcerated people can regain the right to vote in the state of Virginia.
Virginia takes away certain civil rights, including the right to vote from any individual convicted of a felony. Virginia is one of only 7 states where voting rights are permanently taken away from all individuals with felony convictions; the other states are: Alabama, Florida, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Wyoming.
"Formerly incarcerated people are unjustly shut out of our democracy based on a history of racial discrimination and administrative confusion," said Edward Hailes, Jr., Advancement Project senior attorney. "We have worked with the Cooley Godward law firm and many community and faith based groups around the state of Virginia to produce a handbook that will help people with felony convictions navigate the complicated and cumbersome procedures for restoration of voting rights."
