Managing Attorney
The Virginia Justice Center for Farm and Immigrant Workers, Washington DC Metro Area
The Virginia Justice Center for Farm and Immigrant Workers (VJC), a program of the Legal Aid Justice Center, seeks a Managing Attorney to support low-wage immigrant workers in their efforts to find justice and fair treatment in the workplace. These are exciting times for Virginia’s immigrant communities and the VJC is proud to be a leader in the region. This position is located in the diverse Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C. (Falls Church). The VJC uses a multi-pronged strategy that includes legal assistance, community education and outreach, organizing, and legislative advocacy. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Manage an office staffed with two attorneys, two community organizers, a legal assistant, interns, and volunteers.
- Oversee the substantive work of program initiatives.
- Implement strategies to advance policies supporting Virginia’s low-wage immigrant workers.
- Work with the development team to raise funds.
- Work with partner organizations and community members to advance the interests of Virginia’s low-wage immigrant workers.
Qualifications:
- At least three years experience working on behalf of low-wage immigrant workers
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice
- Strong communications skills
- Ability to balance varied responsibilities
- Healthy sense of humor
- Spanish proficiency is required
- Applicants must be admitted to the Virginia State Bar, eligible for reciprocal admission, or willing to sit for the next bar examination

Staff Attorney—Immigrant Integration and Civic Participation Program

Nebraska Appleseed is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, public interest law project dedicated to equal justice for all. Appleseed uses education, legal advocacy, coalition building, and policy expertise to address problems at their roots—such as limited access to legal representation, unfair litigation and public policy, and denial of basic rights and opportunities—rather than their symptoms and to build community strength.
Immigrant Program: Dramatic demographic changes are taking place across Nebraska and the Great Plains. A major priority for Nebraska Appleseed is to seek policies and practices that promote the integration and full participation of new immigrant populations in the region. Key program areas include: comprehensive immigration reform, immigrant access to mainstream financial services, educational opportunity, meatpacking worker health and safety, human rights and immigrant detention, access to public benefits, state integration policies, justice system reform, and civic engagement. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Work with the IICP Director, Program Associate, Program Assistant, and Appleseed Legal Team to carryout the objectives of the Program.
- Identify areas of needed law and policy reform, develop and implement strategies, including litigation, administrative advocacy, and public policy advocacy to bring about policy change at both the state and federal levels.
- Conduct outreach, education, and, advocacy to protect the rights of immigrants in the key program areas.
- Undertake legislative advocacy to develop and promote policies that facilitate immigrant integration and civic participation in Nebraska communities.
- Work with regional and national partners on state and federal level advocacy efforts.
- Involvement in fund-raising efforts, including developing new ideas for fund-raising activities and working with Appleseed staff in the preparation of grant applications.
- Learn about issues and potential or systemic solutions through contact with community members, direct service providers, and community organizations.
- Develop and implement strategies for accomplishing positive changes for immigrants.
- Supervision of support staff, including law clerks and interns.
- Participation, as needed, in administrative tasks and program teams.
Qualifications:
- Licensed to practice law in Nebraska or be willing to take necessary steps to be licensed
- Three years experience practicing law strongly preferred but exceptional recent graduates will be considered
- Legal experience in the areas of immigration law, civil rights, and/or employment law preferred
- Experience with legislative and administrative advocacy preferred
- Excellent legal research, analytic, and writing skills
- Knowledge and awareness of local, regional, and national issues facing immigrant communities
- Fluency in written and spoken Spanish preferred
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively build and maintain community relationships
- Ability to work in a team-oriented and collaborative environment
- Experience in or demonstrated commitment to public interest law and advocacy on behalf of immigrant communities

Team Leader—Northwest Center for Community Change, Washington DC
The Center for Community Change (CCC) is a large, national, nonprofit organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., with a mission to promote the development of community organizing as a national force for social and economic justice. The Northwest Team Leader will provide coordination and support to community-based organizations in the region, with the ultimate goal of increasing the power and scale of those organizations and ensuring that underrepresented populations and geographic areas are effectively served. CCC has a strong preference for the Northwest Team Leader to live in the Northwest and have a good working knowledge of grassroots community organizations in that region. CCC’s Northwest Region is composed of the following states: Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington, and Wyoming.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Provide assistance to grassroots organizations on organizing initiatives at the local, state, and national levels.
- Help link local and regional organizations to others across the country when appropriate.
- Coordinate and be responsible for moving a body of work including developing an overall strategy and work plan with input from other team members and following the organization’s three-year plan.
- Supervise Northwest Team members, including develop individual work plans that support the overall team work plan, conduct regular supervision meetings and provide feedback in a timely manner, and do an annual performance evaluation of the staff this position supervises.
- Develop and monitor budget for the team.
- Work with development and other OU staff on reports and updates as required to on project progress.
- Develop, in collaboration with the development department, a yearly fund-raising plan for the team.
- Responsible for executing strategies which connect with the broader work of the Organizing Unit and the Center for Community Change.
- Help grassroots organizations to develop strategies for building alliances, partnerships, and coalitions with other organizations to enhance their power and to achieve their goals. This may include organizational and strategic development work, fund raising, leadership training, and nonpartisan electoral work.
- Collaborate with local, regional, and national organizing, training, and technical assistance organizations to strategically build new grassroots organizations and support existing ones in the region.
- Support coordinated national and/or local, state, or regional campaigns on specific issues that bring together grassroots strategies with media, research, and policy tools for national and/or state impact.
- Responsible to produce a monthly team report.
- Attend all Organizing Unit staff meetings, CCC all staff meetings and participate in Campaign Council meetings.
- Represent CCC in a professional manner within the organization, among community organizations and allies in a region and within the philanthropic world.
- Perform other duties as assigned by their immediate supervisor or the Director for Organizing.
- This position requires extensive and frequent travel.
Qualifications:
- Extensive knowledge of issues related to the Northwest Region as defined above
- Preference is to have extensive experience working within the community organizing field in one or more of the states within the Northwest Region
- Minimum of five years experience in community organizing and in implementing local, state, or national policy initiatives on poverty issues
- Experience in nonpartisan electoral work helpful
- Demonstrated experience in organizational assessment and development; ability to provide significant organizational development assistance
- Familiarity with and openness to different approaches to grassroots organizing and policy work
- Strong facilitation and coalition building skills
- Financial expertise and budget management
- Ability to work democratically and effectively with diverse groups and people
- Willing to work long, flexible hours and to travel extensively
- Ability to operate at different plateaus
- Mindful of broader vision for the Center, but also of the specific mission of the team itself and able to constantly reconcile the difference between the two
- Experience and comfort working as part of a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural team and knowledge of how to combine assets available to the team in a way that maximizes ability of the team to function at a high level
- Background in community organizing; Ability to deal with grassroots groups and organizing strategies; Some on-the-ground political and/or organizing experience
- Strong team player familiar with team dynamics and willing to work in a team environment
- Strong commitment to social justice and social change
- Knowledge of key issues that the Center currently works on, such as jobs and income support, health care, housing, immigration, education etc.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills are a must
- The ability to produce consistent, quality work in a fast-paced environment is essential
- Ability to speak a second language a plus
