Director
Equal Justice Coalition, Seattle WA

    The Legal Foundation of Washington (LFW) seeks a full-time Director for the Equal Justice Coalition. The Equal Justice Coalition is a committee of the Access to Justice Board. The Director is an employee of LFW. Position will begin in June 2007. The work is challenging and it is addressed in a collegial atmosphere that emphasizes teamwork, flexibility, and mutual accountability.
    Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Manage all aspects of the Equal Justice Coalition, including programs and strategies to educate the public and elected officials about the importance of civil equal justice for low-income people.
    • Advocate for sufficient public funding for civil legal aid programs.
    • Work in close partnership with LFW staff and staff from other organizations to further the goal of expanded access to justice.
    • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with the private bar, judiciary, community organizations, human and social service agencies, local justice systems and government, and other members and supporters of the Alliance for Equal Justice.
    • Staff and work closely with a workgroup that meets twice a month.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree and relevant work experience
    • Ability to work occasional evenings and/or weekends
    • Flexibility; this position has a schedule that varies
    • Ability to travel in-state
    • Have initiative
    • Appreciate and value collegiality and collaboration
    • Excel at organizing, planning, and executing various initiatives
    • Good judgment
    • Maturity, poise, and confidence
    • Excellent writing and public speaking skills
    • High level of energy and enthusiasm

    • Some experience with desktop publishing and web content management systems helpful

Domestic Violence/Family Law Staff Attorneys
Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia, Washington DC

    The Legal Aid Society of the District Columbia seeks at least one attorney for its Domestic Violence/Family Law Unit. The Legal Aid Society provides legal aid and counsel to indigent persons in civil law matters. Legal Aid is the oldest general civil legal services program in DC. This attorney will be part of Legal Aid’s project at the Domestic Violence Intake Center at the Greater Southeast General Hospital (DVICES). The attorney will work both at the DVICES and at Legal Aid’s main office in Northwest DC. Child support enforcement for survivors of domestic violence will be a significant focus of this attorney’s work.
    Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Handle a caseload of family law cases, primarily representing domestic violence victims.
    • Perform initial interviews and safety planning and depending on experience, mentor other attorneys
    • Work on child support matters.

    Qualifications:

    • Experience in domestic violence or family law preferred
    • D.C. bar membership preferred
    • Ability to speak Spanish or another relevant language is a plus
    • Strong litigation, organizational, written, and oral communication skills
    • Legal services experience or equivalent
    • Willingness to handle a significant caseload of individual cases and assist or take lead on policy reform efforts
    • Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice

Housing Law Supervising Attorney

    The Legal Aid Society of the District Columbia seeks a supervisor for its housing law unit. The Legal Aid Society provides legal aid and counsel to indigent persons in civil law matters. Legal Aid is the oldest general civil legal services program in the District of Columbia. Legal Aid has a broad and energetic housing practice giving priority to cases involving the prevention of an avoidable eviction, efforts to address dangerous or unhealthful housing conditions, the preservation of affordable housing including public and assisted housing. In addition to an active litigation docket, Legal Aid engages in significant efforts to address issues of public policy.
    Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Help shape the direction of Legal Aid’s housing law practice.
    • Supervise a unit of attorneys (including senior staff attorneys, staff attorneys, and “loaned associates” from law firms and volunteer interns).
    • Handle a modest individual caseload.
    • Provide management assistance.
    • Work on policy advocacy.
    • Conduct intake.

    Qualifications:

    • Strong litigation, organizational, communication, and leadership skills
    • Ability to work collaboratively with and supervise other staff
    • Significant legal experience in housing law
    • Ability to speak Spanish or another foreign language desirable
    • Significant legal services experience or the equivalent
    • Membership or eligibility for membership in the D.C. bar required
    • Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice

Selected attorneys will work on one of two projects: Community Offices or Court-Based Legal Services.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Community Offices

  • Help staff three community offices in Southeast Washington.
  • Handle a caseload of housing cases.
  • Perform intakes.
  • Engage in community outreach and engage in systemic reform efforts.
  • Split time between community and main office in Northwest D.C.

Court-Based Legal Services

  • Staff new office located at the Landlord and Tenant Branch of the Superior Court, one or two days per week.
  • Handle emergency matters and take cases coming to this office for full litigation.
  • Handle a caseload of housing cases.
  • Engage in systemic reform efforts.

Qualifications (for all positions):

  • Strong litigation, organizational, communication, and leadership skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other staff
  • Legal experience in housing law
  • Legal services experience or the equivalent
  • Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice
  • Bilingual skills preferred but not required
  • Membership or eligibility for membership in the D.C. bar required

    Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Work at Legal Aid’s central office and two community offices—one inside the Children’s Health Project at THE ARC in Southeast D.C. and the other in the offices of Advocates for Justice and Education, also in Southeast D.C.
    • Handle a caseload of public benefits cases.
    • Perform intake.
    • Engage in community outreach.
    • Engage in systemic reform efforts.

    Qualifications:

    • Experience in public benefits law or civil legal services preferred
    • DC bar membership preferred
    • Ability to speak another language desired
