ST. LOUIS, MO -- Advancement Project, the Fair Elections Legal Network (FELN), the American Civil Liberties Union of Eastern Missouri and the ACLU of Kansas and Western Missouri today announced a legal challenge to a ballot proposal to amend the state constitution’s voting requirements, saying that the ballot language misleads voters and if passed will restrict the voting rights of Missourians, including the elderly, people with disabilities, and students, among others.

Reactionary legislation to require voters to present stringent forms of photo identification to vote moved forward in at least four states this week as Advancement Project and its partners fought to ensure that the voices of those who stand to be disenfranchised by the bills were heard. Nationwide, about 11 percent of voters – about 21 million people -- lack or can’t get a current government photo ID.

(ST. LOUIS -- Dec. 10, 2010) – With a recount now underway in Missouri’s 24th Senatorial District, Advancement Project, a leading voter protection organization, is urging the Missouri Secretary of State to ensure that all provisional ballots cast by eligible voters are counted.

(ST. LOUIS -- Nov. 11, 2010) – With a razor-thin margin of 176 votes separating the candidates in State Senate District 24, 198 provisional ballots remain to be counted and Advancement Project has discovered that many students may have been wrongfully turned away without being provided provisional ballots. If these allegations are substantiated and reveal an illegal purge that could affect the outcome of the election, voters or candidates could seek legal remedies including setting aside the election.
