MIAMI, FL – The ACLU of Florida, Advancement Project, and the Florida State Conference of the NAACP released a report today on their study of the ongoing harmful impacts of Florida schools’ “zero-tolerance” policies. The study, entitled “Still Haven’t Shut Off the School-to-Prison Pipeline: Evaluating the Impact of Florida’s New Zero-Tolerance Law,” shows that although the state took a significant step forward by amending its harsh zero-tolerance law in 2009, meaningful reform has still not reached most of the schools – and students – across the state.

With early voting underway and Election Day less than a week away, Advancement Project, a leading voter protection organization, is urging Florida election officials to ensure that thousands of eligible Florida voters are not needlessly disenfranchised by typos and other mistakes in an error-ridden matching process. In a letter to county supervisors of elections, the civil rights group says that voters caught in the web of the state’s so called “no-match, no vote” law should be able to present identification that resolves the discrepancy at the polls and cast a regular ballot.
