PROMOTING A JUST DEMOCRACY THROUGH SENSIBLE VOTING REFORM IN MISSOURI

The issue brief is forward looking and focuses on reforms that would provide voters with an improved voting process through easy legislative fixes in advance of the 2012 Presidential Election.

Advancement Project recommends the following reforms in Missouri:

  • Correct Missouri’s implementation of the matching process mandated by the Help America Vote Act to ensure that this process does not prevent eligible voter applicants from becoming registered to vote.

Martin Luther King and Voting Rights in Virginia

Jan. 15, 2010 marks the 81st anniversary of the birth of one of America’s greatest citizens, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It also marks the last full day of the term of another great American, Governor Tim Kaine. The coincidence of these events has an ironic ring of hopefulness, as the nation awaits a signal from Governor Tim Kaine as to whether he will walk down the path of justice when he leaves office. Governor Kaine has the plenary power to issue an executive order on or before Jan.

VOTERS' RIGHTS IN PENNSYLVANIA

All too often Pennsylvania voters, would-be voters, and poll workers mistakenly believe that people who have served time for a felony can no longer vote or that they must wait five years after release from prison or jail before they can vote. This is a myth. As of the year 2000, an individual is entitled to vote once released, even if he or she is serving probation or parole. Wayne Jacobs, Co-Founder of Ex-Offenders for Community Empowerment says it’s important for all voters to know their rights.

LAWSUIT AGAINST THE STATE OF FLORIDA

May 15, 2004

Advancement Project and others have filed a lawsuit against Florida's Secretary of State, Glenda Hood, for placing artificial barriers to voting on voters. The group claims those barriers will disenfranchise thousands of eligible Florida voters in the upcoming November 2nd election. The lawsuit was filed in a federal court to strike down Florida's citizenship box and I.D. number requirements for completion of voter registration forms. The report identifies strategies that would be most effective in raising public awareness that the current combination of unduly burdensome procedures, underfunded bureaucracies and partisan officials has created a patchwork of arbitrary practices tending to contract, rather than expand the franchise.
